Environment

Roosvelt said “To waste and destroy our natural resources, to skin and exhaust the land instead of using it so as to increase its usefulness, will result in undermining in the days of our children the very prosperity which we ought by right to hand down to them.”

3b construction are committed to responsible development and have established principles on environmental issues which are detailed in our Sustainability Statement. Click here to download a copy. Microsoft Word Format - Adobe PDF Format

Below are some of the latest environmental initiatives being undertaken by 3b construction.

Current Environmental Initiatives
Underfloor heating

Underfloor HeatingThis type of heating will increase a persons feeling of thermal comfort by providing a stable draught free temperature throughout your new home.

A number of key benefits from having underfloor heating are

  • Space
Interior design of your home does not depend on a heating engineers input as you can you use all of the floor space and not worry about positioning of radiators.
  • Comfort
Radiant heat will provide the highest levels of thermal comfort as the heat will be consistent and stable.
  • Silence
Compared to conventional systems, there is little noise.
  • Environmentally Friendly
    This system is energy efficient.
  • Economic
As there is less energy waste so there will need to be less energy use keeping costs to a minimum.
Ground Source Heat Pumps

Configuration of a looped ground source heat pumpThis is an energy efficient way of heating your home and providing hot water. Solar heat builds up in the soil all year round and is extracted by means of a buried plastic tubing. 3b construction are currently using two different methods to harness this energy, the Surface collector method and the Ground probe method.

Both of these methods use an environmentally friendly, non freezing emulsion of water glycol which circulates in the plastic tubing, this is similar to the cooling system of a car.
The main difference between the two methods is that the Surface collector is installed, only 20cm under the local frost line, as a series of loops whereas the Ground probe method utilises the energy that lies deeper in the “near surface geothermal layer”.

The vertical bore hole used to extract this heat requires little space and can be drilled on the smallest of plots.

3b construction have the required certification to install these pumps.

Controlled Domestic Ventilation

Around 90% of our time is now spent indoors which means management of this inside climate becomes ever more important to our health and well being.

The development of the Controlled Ventilation system stems from the 1970’s when early efforts were made to save energy.

This resulted in the Construction Industry developing insulation material which was too restrictive on air flow between the outside and inside of buildings creating polluted inside air.

In all buildings there are certain levels of uncontrolled ventilation, for example from pipe ducts, door spacings etc and this is increased by people opening and closing doors and windows.

This type of ventilation also accounts for a great deal of heat loss increasing fuel bills and wasting non renewable energy resources.

By installing Controlled Domestic Ventilation in our new homes 3b construction hope to introduce a system that will ensure efficient air exchange in and out of the house even when doors and windows are closed.

This will reduce energy bills and reduce wastage of non renewable energy resources.

Solar Thermal

Solar Panel arrayCaptures solar energy and uses it to heat hot water in your home. These solar panels are specially designed to absorb energy when conditions are not clear overhead, all too common in South West Scotland.

The panels we use are completely environmentally friendly and are recyclable.

We have recently gained ‘Clear Skies’ accreditation for grant applications from the Energy Saving Trust.
